The God of Medicine

God’s Provision for Healing

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to feel 110% glorious every single day? No sickness, no worry, no pain—waking up every morning without an ache in your body or a care in your mind. Isn’t that what Heaven will be like? A perfect place with perfect bodies, free from everything that weighs us down now?

But have you ever stopped to consider that a Merciful and Gracious God has already made a way for His children not to suffer—even now?

God’s Design for Healing

From the very beginning, God designed this Earth to care for us. He created plants, leaves, and herbs to be our medicine. In the Garden of Eden, before sin introduced sickness and death, He gave Adam and Eve everything they needed to thrive. And even after the fall, His mercy continued, providing healing through the very creation He spoke into existence.

“The Lord created medicines from the earth, and a sensible person will not hesitate to use them.”
(Sirach 38:4, Apocrypha)

We see this truth carried all the way into eternity. In the Book of Revelation, a tree stands in the heavenly city, bearing fruit for humanity to eat, with leaves that bring healing to the nations. And beside it? The river of living water, flowing straight from the throne of God, sustaining us forever.

“On either side of the river was the tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.”
(Revelation 22:2)

This is a powerful reminder that God’s care for us doesn’t end with this life. The Earth we live on now, and the new Earth to come, are both designed to sustain and restore us—both our mortal and immortal bodies. He never intended for us to fend for ourselves. He gave us what we need to survive and thrive.

Medicine is a Gift, Not a Lack of Faith

So here’s the thing: don’t ever be ashamed to take medicine. Don’t let guilt or doubt make you feel like leaning on the resources of this Earth means you’re weak in faith. Medicine—whether it comes from the plants God created or the scientific advancements He has allowed us to discover—is part of His provision.

“A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.”
(Proverbs 17:22)

God, in His wisdom, has given us both natural and medical remedies. If your body needs help, don’t hesitate to use the tools He has provided. Faith is not about refusing medicine but about trusting the ultimate Healer while making use of what He has graciously given.

“Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and turn away from evil. This will bring healing to your body and refreshment to your bones.”
(Proverbs 3:7-8)

Even the apostle Paul encouraged the use of medicine! When writing to Timothy, he told him to drink a little wine for his stomach ailments. It was a practical solution for a physical problem. Faith and medicine are not opposites—they work together under God’s sovereign hand.

“No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments.”
(1 Timothy 5:23)

God Heals the Soul First

However, here’s the balance we must hold: rely on God more than the medicine cabinet. Medicine may treat the body, but only God can heal the soul.

The Earth’s resources are tools, but they are not our ultimate hope. The advancements of science are blessings, but they are not our sustainer. God is.

“I am the Lord who heals you.”
(Exodus 15:26)

Throughout Scripture, God is revealed as Jehovah Rapha—The Lord Who Heals. While physical healing is a part of His grace, His greater concern is always for the soul. Sin, bitterness, and brokenness do far more damage than sickness ever could. That’s why His greatest act of healing was through the cross.

“He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.”
(1 Peter 2:24)

Medicine can restore the body, but only Jesus can restore the heart. Healing is temporary; salvation is eternal.

Stewards of God’s Provision

As God’s people, we are stewards of the Earth and of our own bodies. The food we eat, the medicines we take, and the care we give ourselves are all part of honoring the Creator.

“Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”
(1 Corinthians 10:31)

If we take care of our bodies, using the good gifts God has given us, we show gratitude. If we refuse what He has provided out of pride or misplaced fear, we reject His wisdom. Healing comes from Him, whether it arrives miraculously, through medicine, or in eternity.

The Ultimate Healer

So, the next time you reach for medicine, thank God for it. Thank Him for the wisdom to know how to use it and for the healing it brings. But most importantly, trust Him above all else.

Because at the end of the day, the greatest healing—the kind that goes beyond our bodies to our very souls—comes from Him alone.

“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits—who forgives all your iniquities, who heals all your diseases.”
(Psalm 103:2-3)

Rely on Him. Trust Him. And know that He has already made a way for His children to be cared for—both now and forever.
