The Cost of Sin
Tears blur the ink on these pages because the reality of what my freedom cost is unbearable to comprehend. We speak so lightly of sin, as if it’s just a fleeting action or momentary lapse. But sin is far more. It is a weight—a crushing, all-encompassing force—that demanded a price too great for any human to bear.
That price was paid with the flesh and blood of Jesus Christ.
“Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.”
These words, spoken from the mouth of Jesus as He hung on the cross, pierce my heart. How could He forgive while enduring unimaginable agony? How could He intercede for those who mocked, scourged, and crucified Him?
Luke 23:34
“Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.’ Dividing his garments among them, they cast lots.”
The Reality of the Cross
The price of sin wasn’t merely a spiritual transaction. It was brutal, raw, and excruciating in every physical and emotional sense. The medical descriptions of His suffering are more than I can bear to read, yet they are necessary to understand the depth of His love.
Hematidrosis
When Jesus prayed in Gethsemane, His sweat became like great drops of blood falling to the ground. This rare condition, hematidrosis, occurs under extreme emotional distress, where blood vessels rupture into sweat glands. He knew what lay ahead. He knew the scourging, the mockery, the nails, the suffocation—and yet He willingly submitted.
Luke 22:44
“Being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down on the ground.”
The Scourging
Roman scourging was a death sentence in itself. The whips—laced with iron balls and shards of bone—didn’t merely break the skin. They tore through flesh, muscle, and sinew. By the time the soldiers were done, His body was unrecognizable.
Isaiah 52:14
“Just as many were astonished at you, so your visage was marred more than any man, and your form more than the sons of men.”
The Crown of Thorns
A mockery of His kingship, the crown of thorns wasn’t symbolic. It pierced deeply into His scalp, sending sharp waves of pain through the nerves of His head. Blood poured from His brow as soldiers mocked, spat, and struck Him.
Matthew 27:29-30
“They twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on His head. They put a staff in His right hand. They knelt before Him and mocked Him, saying, ‘Hail, King of the Jews!’ Then they spit on Him, took the staff, and struck Him on the head again and again.”
The Crucifixion
When the nails were driven into His wrists and feet, it wasn’t merely pain—it was a calculated form of torture. Every breath required Him to push up against the nails, tearing His flesh further with each movement. This agony lasted for hours.
Psalm 22:16-17
“Dogs have surrounded me; a band of evildoers has encircled me. They have pierced my hands and feet. I can count all my bones—they stare and gloat over me.”
“It Is Finished”
After hours of agony, Jesus spoke the words that changed eternity:
“It is finished.”
The debt of sin was paid. The wrath of God was satisfied.
John 19:30
“When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, ‘It is finished,’ and He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.”
The Purpose of the Cross
Why did He endure this? Why did the Son of God—the Creator of all things—submit to such humiliation and pain? The answer is both simple and unfathomable: love.
Romans 5:8
“But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
The cost of my sin was the crucifixion and destruction of the body of Christ. My freedom, my salvation, and my reconciliation to God came at the highest price: the life of the sinless One.
The Victory of the Cross
Jesus didn’t just endure the cross—He triumphed over it. He took the full weight of sin, death, and hell upon Himself and emerged victorious. His sacrifice wasn’t the end; it was the beginning of eternal hope for all who believe.
1 Corinthians 15:55-57
“‘Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?’ The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
The Call to Respond
How can I take this lightly? How can I look upon the cross and not fall to my knees in awe and gratitude? This is the cost of my sin—the cost of my freedom.
Repent and believe. This is the only response worthy of such love.
Isaiah 53:5
“But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on Him, and by His wounds we are healed.”
Mark 8:34
“Then Jesus called the crowd to Him along with His disciples and said: ‘Whoever wants to be My disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow Me.’”
The cross is not just a historical event. It is the eternal proof of God’s love, the unshakable foundation of our faith, and the greatest victory ever won. Never take it lightly.
This entry is a cry from the depths of my soul: to remember, to honor, and to live in the shadow of the cross. Jesus paid it all. Let me never forget the cost of my freedom.
